VSC Update November 2013
Opposition destabilization plans
- fears intensify ahead of December elections
1)
WATCH THE NEW FILM ‘APRIL – BETWEEN PEACE AND RAGE’ ON THE VIOLENCE BEHIND VENEZUELA’S OPPOSITION

This short Venezuelan film looks at the violence of the right-wing opposition in Venezuela against supporters of the elected government in the aftermath of Nicolas Maduro's election victory in April 2013, which led to the death of 11 people.

The film is especially relevant as we approach December's elections in Venezuela which may be another focal point for a wave of destabilization .

President Maduro has warned that extremists in Venezuela's right-wing and anti-democratic opposition are trying to push the country to "total collapse" with a sustained campaign of destabilization and economic warfare, echoing that which preceded the coup against Allende forty years ago in Chile.

2) INTERVIEW WITH ALVARO SANCHEZ OF THE VENEZUELAN EMBASSY ON THE DESTABILIZATION ATTEMPTS AGAINST NICOLAS MADURO

After the recent UK premiere of the documentary April: between peace and rage, VSC spoke to Alvaro Sanchez, chargé d’affaires at the Venezuelan Embassy, about the film, what it reveals about Venezuela’s right-wing opposition and the ongoing destabilization ahead of December’s elections.

In the interview he explains that:
"The film shows the political violence that took place earlier this year in Venezuela, in the aftermath of the presidential election in April. It’s a tragic story. Eleven innocent people lost their lives as a result of this unnecessary and outrageous political violence encouraged by the extremists at the heart of Venezuela’s opposition. This was a blatant attempt to oust the government of Nicolas Maduro before it was even sworn into office. Sadly their deaths got very little coverage across the world. If they had it would make it much less likely that this would ever happen again. As we approach elections in December, it is an important time for democrats all over the world to speak out to condemn any violence against a legitimate and elected government as we have in Venezuela, as totally unacceptable."

3) OPPOSITION RALLIES LOOK TO DESTABILIZE VENEZUELA

In the context of ongoing attempts to destabilize the Venezuelan government, members of the country’s US backed opposition protested in early November against what they called the “dictatorship” of democratically-elected President Nicolas Maduro.

Responding to anti-government messaging disseminated across social media, members of the opposition demonstrated in a handful of cities across Venezuela. Part of a strategy aimed at achieving “social discontent” and altering the electoral tide before mayoral elections early next month, the protests included vague calls for “a new president” and “an end to crisis”.
